How Lockdown Is Changing Baby Names!

Our lives have all been affected by the coronavirus pandemic in some way or another, but a consequence of the crisis that you might not have predicted is the impact that it’s had on the names we decide to give our babies.

A new survey, carried out by channelmum.com and reported on by Metro, has revealed that three out of five parents asked say they think names like Rona, Corina, Corah, Lochlan and Lockie will all disappear out of the name charts because they remind people of lockdown and the virus.

Instead, other names like Patience, Constance, Charity, Hope and Faith are expected to do a lot better, as a result. Meanwhile, more than half of those surveyed said they’d choose a name associated with rainbows because of what they’ve come to represent, with names including Indigo, Blue and Iris (Greek for ‘rainbow’).

SJ Strum, baby name expert with the website, was quoted by the news source as saying: “Baby names reflect changing times and never more so than when the world is facing a catastrophe.

“The current crisis means parents are understandably stressed and anxious, so are using new-born’s names to celebrate new life and joy. Positive names are a wonderful way to keep focusing on the future and means that the child knows their name has real meaning.”

When you have a shortlist of names, it’s always a good idea to see what the initials look like when paired with your last name – as well as thinking about any potential nicknames that might crop up and which you may not like.
